Gold fever

Day 5, Juneau

This is the capital of Alaska, and a very large city.  I thought it would be much smaller since the only way in or out is by boat or airplane.   Turns out it is the second largest city in the US (based on land not population).

Another beautiful day, warm, partly cloudy.

We took a bus to Mendenhall glacier.  Then hiked in a mile to an Awesome sight.   I will never forget the blue color of the glacier, it seemed so pure.   This glacier is melting fast and has formed a large lake and on the lake there where many icebergs floating around.
With my binocular I was able to see good detail of the cracks and jagged sections of the glacier that are ready to fall off.

On our walk there were many wildflowers.

In the afternoon we panned for gold.   We were driven up a mountain near an old mining site.  We were given instructions and a pan per filled with sand.  We all had gold flakes at the bottom ( placed there by the guide). The flakes are worth about 23 cents each.  Despite the fact they were put in the sand it was still fun to go through the process.  I dug some sand out of the creek and did two more pans, no gold but some interesting rocks that have gold sparkles.

Gelato seems to be the ice cream of choice at every port so we had some today.  I had Mango delight and chocolate, and they were both delicious.  Nita had salted caramel and chocolate, also very good.

I must complain about the gift stores.  I want to buy a nice t shirt on this trip.  There are many t shirts with very nice colors and pictures, however for women the t's were fitted, thin material and short capped sleeves.  All I want is a regular style t with a nice Alaska theme.

We soaked in the therapy pool once again.  Then had the cocktail of the day as we lounged on the deck, with sushi snacks.  A very nice treat.

After dinner we attended a show.  The singer was from Broadway, taking time off to do the cruise, who was very good.   Her big talent was impersonating other female singers.  She would mimic their voice and mannerisms.   She did a great job and was very entertaining.

I have slept very well each night, better than at home, and tonight I am very tired and ready to crawl into bed.
